Historical and archeological reserves in the region

The region of Alexandrovo is very rich of historical monuments. They are rests of Neolithic, Thrace, roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian monuments. On every cliff surrounding the village are rests from Roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian citadels and fortress. The most important historical places in the region are:

The archaeological reserve “Madara Horseman” - the unique monumental rock relief of worldwide fame, dating from the 7th – 8th c. A.D. The carved relief is of a majestic horseman 23 m above ground level in an almost vertical hundred-metre high cliff. The horseman is thrusting a spear into a lion lying at his horse's feet. A dog runs after the horseman. It is a magnificent work made on the rock by an unknown sculptor, which inspires admiration and excitement, even today - thirteen centuries after its creation. In 1979 it was proclaimed to be a part of the World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.

Veliki Preslav ( The Great Preslav) was the second Capital of the First Bulgarain Kingdom. Tzar Simeon ( 893-927 ) erected the new capital which became a powerful cultural, political and administrative centre of the young christian state. The town had area of about 5 km2 surrounded by fortress walls up to 3 m thick.

National historical-archaeological preserve “Pliska”
Capital of the first Bulgarian state established by Chan Asparouh. Relics from monumental architectural objects are situated on an area of 23 km?. In the archaeological museum, conditions of life of the villages, the materials and the spiritual culture from the period VII – X centuries are shown.

Historical – archaeological preserve “Shumen Fortress”
Rising three kilometers west of the city of Shumen is the Shumen Fortress which has existed more than 3200 years. During early and late middle ages the Shumen Fortress was Bulgarian maintained and played an important role in the history. During 1444, about the time of the crusade march of Vladislav III Yagelo, the fortress was destroyed and burned down. It is one of the most explored archaeological sites in the country. The fortress and the cultural architecture, homes and thousands of movable monuments bear record of the diverse functions during the different periods, predominantly during the time of the second Bulgarian kingdom.

Vineyards

The region is very popular with the famous vineyards. In The region are many cellars with very good wine products. The area occupied by modern-day Bulgaria is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world. Wine was being made here several thousand years before the birth of Christ. Well before the Roman Empire held sway, the Thracians were cultivating vines on the Balkan hillsides; Homer mentions Thracian wine in the Iliad and the Odyssey. In the first century AD the Romans came to the region and extended the wine-growing territories. During the time of the Eastern Roman Empire (the 4-th and the 5-th centuries), Constantinople became an important market for the Balkan wines. In the Middle Ages improvements in winemaking were carried out in the cellars of the region's many monasteries.

Vinex Slavyantsi JSC is one of the most famous Bulgarian wineries. It is situated in the famous Sungurlare valley which is the most Eastern part of the Bulgarian sub-Balkan wine-growing region.

The region where Vinex Slavyantsi is situated is with an altitude of 250 m and annual precipitation of 550 - 600 l/m2 . Soils are not very fertile, mainly of the sandy and clay types. Winter is relatively mild, and summer is cool. These soil and climatic conditions are very favorable for growing vineyards.

The archaeological findings and monuments point to the fact that both vine-growing and wine-producing have been know here since ancient times. An important characteristic of the region is that vineyards are used mainly for wine production. The vineyards are compactly located on the slopes of the hills. The region is ecologically clean. The main white wine varieties include: Red Misket, Muscat Otonel, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Ugni Blanc. The red wines are: Cabernet, Merlot, and Pamid.

Vinex Slavyantsi owns a large-capacity modern plant This includes four well-equipped wine cellars for grape processing, and vinification located at Slavyantsi, Sungurlare, Karnobat, and Chernitsa. 25 to 30,000 tons of grape are processed annually in these cellars.

 The company also has two modern plants for stabilization and bottling of table and sparkling wines and one plant for the production and bottling of Vermouths, grape and white brandies.

In the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century begins, the growth of the wine industry, which starts to be the main livelihood of the population of the Osmar village. The peak in the sales of the Osmar wine was reached during the period of 1934-1944, when grapes and wine had been exported to the German, Austrian and Italian markets.More info at: http://www.osmarpelin.com/english/index.html

Fishing area

The region is a very popular for fishing area. They are many lakes and rivers. Close to the village is a little lake and in the vicinity are the lakes of Kamchia (25 km) and Ticha dam (the third in the country) on 30 km.

Natural reserves, birdwatching and wildlife paradise

Patleina Natural Reserve, situated near Veliki Preslav, and Dervisha Reserve are the only places where wild carob, horse chestnut and Urumov tulip /Tulipa urumoffii/ grow. There is a big hunting farm, where one can see muflons, doe, wild boar, fallow deer, red deer. The farm is managed by the State Game-keeping Station in Preslav. The Loddon lily /Galanthus nivalis L var. gracilis/ fields near Kochovo with an area of 0.12 sq.km and near Osmar with an area of 0.19 sq.km are protected areas and the only ones in Northern Bulgaria.

On the crossroad between Europe and Asia, Bulgaria is one of the best European birdwatching destinations. For the moment in the country have been recorded more than 400 birds species. For some of the breeding species Bulgaria is simply the best destination - here you can enjoy many species like Levant Sparrowhawk, Long-legged Buzzard, Rock Partridge, Pygmy Cormorant, Ruddy Shelduck, Semi-collared Flycatcher, Masked Shrike, Olive-tree and Paddyfield Warblers, Sombre Tit and many more birds. Across Bulgaria pass two of the big European migratory roads - Via Pontica and Via Aristotelis. During the autumn you can observe thousand of migrating birds - White and Black Storks, White and Dalmatian Pelicans, Lesser Spotted, Spotted and Booted Eagles, Long-legged and Honey Buzzards, Cranes, etc.

In the area of village of Alexandrovo is easy to observe many rare and interesting birds like: Levant Sparrowhawk, Eagle Owl, Scope Owl, Somber Tit, Black-headed Bunting, etc. In the village breedings species like Tree Sparrows, Golden Oriole, Hoopoe, Syrian, Green and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, etc.

Golf course

Another attraction of the region is the two new-to-be-build golf courses. They have already commenced and they are situated close to the village. One of them is located near to the town of Shumen (38 km from Alexandrovo) and the other one is 80 km away from the village.
